Scarborough and the North York Moors

Staying at The Esplanade Hotel, Scarborough
Sunday 18th - Friday 23rd August 2019

Sunday
We board our coach this morning and head in a north easterly direction, passing Birmingham, Nottingham and Sheffield before arriving at Scarborough on the East Coast. Scarborough has elegant architecture, interesting shops and attractive gardens, a perfect base for our holiday. Nearby, the North York Moors provides a beautiful contrast with spectacular views.

Monday
Our excursion today takes us to Pickering to board the North York Moors Railway for a nostalgic journey through the National Park and disembarking at Grosmont. Our coach then takes us on to Goathland which is famous as Aidensfield in the Heartbeat series and recently as Hogsmead in the Harry Potter series. After some time exploring this area, we continue to the lovely fishing port of Whitby for an afternoon visit.

Tuesday
A day at leisure in Scarborough. There are many attractions in Scarborough. The 12th Century castle separates the North and South bay and the Victorian Tramway links the town with the harbour. Within easy reach is the Rotunda Museum, The Sea Life Sanctuary and the Peasholm Park Japanese Gardens.

Wednesday
Today we will be visiting Ampleforth Abbey which is set in 2000 acres in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We will have tea and biscuits on arrival before a guided tour of The Orchard & Cider Mill. We can then take a self-guided visit to Ampleforth Abbey. There will be group lunch and produce tasting. There are lovely woodland and lakeside walks as well as a shop and tea room. We will have time to enjoy the area in the afternoon.

Thursday
A visit to this part of the country would not be complete without a day in the splendid city of York. We can enjoy the history and culture of this walled riverside city with the 13th Century Gothic cathedral and 30 world class museums. Alternatively, there is The Shambles, a well preserved 15th Century street or varied shopping and many tea rooms.

Friday
We leave the North East this morning after a varied holiday experience and return home making a lunch stop en-route.
