Staying at: Makeney Hall, Belper
Monday 5th - Friday 9th October 2020
We board our coach this morning and head northward towards the fantastic scenery, quaint towns and beautiful country houses of the Peak District National Park. Our base for this 4 night Derbyshire holiday is Makeney Hall, Belper.
We begin our excursion today in Cromford. Here we enjoy a 2 hour narrow boat cruise through the picturesque Derwent Valley. We have a commentary about the boat and Derwent Valley as well as a short walk to enjoy the views. Following the cruise we have a guided tour of the Cromford Mills World Heritage Site, birthplace of the modern factory system. This afternoon we visit Crich Tramway Village, a period village museum. We can enjoy travelling along traditional village streets on a vintage tram, seeing the exhibitions and enjoying the view.
Our excursion today starts at the spectacular Chatsworth House where we have the morning at leisure. Chatsworth is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and has 30 magnificent rooms to explore, a 300 year old cascade waterfall as well as fantastic grounds and gardens. In the afternoon we visit the market town of Bakewell, home of the famous pudding, located on the River Wye. Some free time here to wander around the attractive courtyards and shops.
We make our way today to Burton upon Trent where we visit the National Brewery Centre Museum for a guided tour and tasting. In the afternoon we make a visit to Kedleston Hall, the last of Derbyshire’s great houses to be built to rival Chatsworth. This mansion was built between 1759 - 65 by the architect Brian Adam. It is set in 800 acres of parkland and landscaped pleasure gardens.
We leave Derbyshire this morning to make our return journey. We make a lunch stop at Webbs of Wychbold en route, arriving in the evening.
