Three Countries Alpine Discovery

Staying at: Hotel Tyrol, Pfunds

Friday 24th July - Sunday 2nd August 2020

We board our coach and travel to Dover for the short sea crossing to Calais. From Calais we travel to Metz for our overnight stay at the Ibis Metz Centre Gare.

From Metz we make our way to the delightful Austrian village of Pfunds for our 7 night stay. This will be the base for our Three Countries Alpine Discovery.

Today we visit the beautiful Alpine city of Innsbruck, the capital of the Tyrol. Innsbruck has a spectacular mountain backdrop and is full of historical buildings. We have some time here at leisure before visiting the amazing Swarovski Crystals World in Wattens. Visitors wonder at this unique attraction. There are fourteen 'Chambers of Wonder' created by world renowned artists to marvel at plus, of course, a chance to purchase some of the crystal products.

A day at leisure to experience the local area. Explore the village, enjoy Apple strudel at one of the cafes or relax at the hotel's leisure facilities.

We take a short drive from Pfunds, through spectacular mountain scenery, to the resort of Samnaun in Switzerland. We can enjoy some duty free shopping in Samnaun and we could take a ride in the world’s first double decker cable car. Admire views from the peak, enjoy a drink or take lunch in the mountain top restaurant.

Why Duty free? More than 100 years ago there was no direct access to the town via Switzerland and it had to rely on supplies from Austria. As the customs office would have cost more than the customs revenue Samnaun was declared duty free.

Our excursion today takes us into Switzerland and through the Lower Engadine Valley to the resort town of St Moritz. We have some time at leisure to enjoy the town before making our way to Pontresina where we board the Bernina Express. This is one of Switzerland’s most scenic routes. We travel through the Bernina Pass on a 2 hour journey. The train has panoramic carriages so that we can fully enjoy the stunning scenery.

Another day, another country. Our visit today is to Italy. We travel over the spectacular Reschen Pass and along the Etsch Valley with its vineyards, orchards and ruined castles. We stop at the lovely spa town of Merano for some free time in the quaint centre with markets before heading to the Castel Rametz for a wine tasting. The 13th Century Castel has a small museum and restaurant as well as the winery.

The scenic Kaunertal Glacier Panoramic Road is our journey today. Winding roads lead through this stunning landscape alongside the perpetual ice. Viewing platforms and historic sites dot the route. We make a stop at the Gespatch Reservoir, the largest in Western Austria.

We leave Pfunds this morning and make our way to Metz for our return overnight stay.

We make the sea crossing from Calais to Dover today with a chance to make purchases on the ferry. From Dover our coach will complete the homeward journey arriving during the evening.
