Little Railways of the Rhine

Staying at: the Bellevue Rheinhotel, Boppard

Sunday 14th - Friday 19th June 2020

Our ferry crossing today is from Dover to Calais. From Calais we proceed to Lille and the Altia Hôtel for our overnight stay.

This morning we continue our journey through Belgium passing Gent, Brussels and onto the German border at Aachen. From here we travel towards Koblenz and our journey takes us along the Rhine to Boppard. We arrive during the afternoon and have the rest of the day at leisure here.

We travel, this morning to Konigswinter, an historic Rhine Valley town, located at the foot of the Siebengebirge Hills. We then board the Drachenfelsbahn, Germany’s oldest cog railway for a return journey. We cover a height difference of 220m to the top and see the ruined Drachenfels Castle with great views across the Rhine Valley. This afternoon we have a scenic river cruise from Oberlahnstein, through the northern section of the Rhine valley to Boppard.

This morning our coach will take us to the pretty riverside town of Cochem. Here we embark on a round trip cruise along the Moselle River, enjoying views of the 11th Century, Gothic Reichsburg castle and the vineyards. After the cruise we have the rest of the day in Cochem. We have time to explore the old town, with its quaint squares, half timbered buildings and imposing town gates.

Our excursion today is on the Vulkan Express. We board the train at Brohl. This unique narrow gauge railway meanders through the Brohl valley into the Eifel hills. The journey takes one and a half hours and climbs around 1310ft. We then continue, by coach to the Ahr, one of Germany’s most famous wine growing regions. We visit the town of Mayschoss and can enjoy a wine tasting in one of the towns traditional wine cellars.

We leave Boppard and return to Calais for our return ferry crossing and further journey home. We arrive in the evening.
